A SAD RECUE STORY WITH A HAPPY ENDING |
HoneyBear (12 years old) was dumped in the after hours receiving kennel at the Peninsula Humane Society in San Mateo Co. He was found wandering the streets and, as you can see by the pictures, was in horrible condition as a result of years of neglect and abuse. When the Humane Society Officer saw this poor dog she cried. This very sweet and docile guy was about 20 pounds underwieght. He was missing hair on all four of his legs including feet, fore chest, and under his chest and belly, along both sides of his ribcage, tail area, neck face and eyes. His skin looked like that of an elephant and just as thick. This was due to an untreated skin disease similar to mange. There was a substantial amount of green and white sbustance oozing from his eyes, which ran down his cheek. His eyes were so cloudy with this substance the officer couldn't tell if he was blind. His ears were so badly infected the ear flaps stuck to the sides of his neck. His smell was so awful it will never leave the kennel area where he was housed. |
Unbelievely, his owner came to claim him the next day! Hoveybear was with these owners since he was 8 weeks old. He lived outside and was never allowed inside the house. The Humane Officer saw his doghouse in the far end of the yard and it was filthy and smelled as bad as he did. He hadn't been to a Veterinarian since he was a puppy. The owner who surrendered Honey Bear and will be facing animal cruelty charges. |
Rescue was contacted by the Officer at the Humane Society and a loving Foster took care of him for a week. He was seen by a Veterinarian and promptly put on all the medications needed to help restore him to health. Blood tests revealed (although somewhat anemic) all his conditions could be treated and, hopefully, Honeybear will be healthy and free from pain soon. We felt that although 12 years old, he more than deserved to live his remaining years in comfort and painfree in a loving and caring home. That home has been found (thank you Debbie DeNardi for all your help) and HoneyBear has new toys, bed and plenty of food. |
And thanks to all our Rescue friends who generously donate to Rescue to enable us to help sweet and gentle Goldens such as HoneyBear. We always need your help.
